Mission Quilters

It's Funny Friday

The locked supply closet, most of the fabric comes in as donations.  Most fabric for baby & children's quilts are purchased by the quilters themselves.

I would like to show you a few beautiful quilts that our Mission Quilters make.  These very talented and wonderful ladies are our Church quilters. They make quilts for the local crisis centers here, I think there are 3 or 4 that they supply with quilts.

They are the most wonderful ladies, the "senior" in the group is 95 years young.  So, what do I do, you may ask?  Well, for one thing since I do not quilt I provide the entertainment.  They love funny stories and listening about my crafts and adventures.

Each lady has a special job and believe me - don't try and help, nope.....when I first joined I wanted to learn to sew on labels, well Miss Elizabeth came in, saw me working and went and sat along the wall with a most hurt look on her face.  Okay - I learned my lesson.  What do I do?  I help "sandwich" the layers.  The two ladies that I help have bad backs (they are in their 80's) so I do all the bending, stretching for them.  It's fun and I do enjoy it.

The lady who began the group passed away several years ago and left a sum of money for the group.  They were able to purchase 2 sewing machines and to date purchase the batting by the roll from Jo-Ann Fabrics® with that monetary gift.

Two of the ladies sew the squares together at home, they are very experienced quilters and their work is beautiful.  Milly (our 95 year young) works on the children's/babies quilts.  Our Church gives a baby quilt to each child at Baptism, and they send several children's quilts to the crisis centers with the adult quilts.

A few months ago I was listening to them talking about how difficult it can be to cut the squares accurately, (and with arthritic hands) so - I went and bought them an AccuQuilt Go® machine.  Oh my goodness, it was like I gave them a priceless treasure.  They were so cute, at first I had to do all the cutting, then one by one they wanted to "try" and from then on it has been "well, I can do that for you". (Some ladies don't have the strength to turn the handle so they sit and watch.)  They are so precious.  I can't tell you how many times they bring up that I bought it for them.  I think they have told Pastor about a dozen times.  I would have rather it be kept quiet - but - that didn't happen.

Am I blessed?  Without a millisecond's hesitation - YES, in so many ways.

Hugs ♥
Thank you for dropping in, I love your visits.  Have a very blessed weekend.

  2. What a huge amount of Love these quilts are made with. We have a similar group at our church that makes quilts for people in need.

In stead of giving a quilt at a baptism, every baby is given a Teddy with their name on plus the date of the baptism.

Spread the warmth and Love with your quilts far and wide.

  12. My grandmother belonged to a quilting circle at her church where the women did the same thing. I used to go with her and the ladies would let me join in. I was six years old at the time. Sitting there learning to quilt will always be one of my favorite memories. I wonder if they left my stitches in or pulled them out after I left.
Thanks for sharing this story. Hugs
